iPod Recording Devices

Recording on your iPod isn’t exactly a newsflash. You’ve been able to do it for a long time. With the new devices on today’s market, you can get a much higher quality sound.

Apple has upgraded the newest generation iPods to record in higher fidelity stereo sound. And fortunately for us, whenever Apple comes out with something new, another manufacturer gives us toys to go along with it.

Thus was born the Belkin TuneTalk for the video iPod and the XtremeMac MicroMemo for the second-generation nanos – the aluminum ones. These both produce high quality recordings without having to install any extra software.

Both of them connect to the dock and draw their power from your iPod’s battery. You can use a 3.5mm input for an external microphone. The microphone input can also be plugged into your computer and record directly from there. Both of these recording devices use the software that build into the iPod’s operating system. Nothing like an Apple to make life easier!

The XtremeMac MicroMemo matches the nano perfectly and comes with a small speaker to playback your recordings. It also has a built-in microphone on a flexible rod that you can bend in any direction. This works great under most circumstances, but if you’re planning to record music or a podcast, get a better external microphone.

The Belkin TuneTalk for the iPod video has two directional microphones so that you can record in stereo. The drawback to this feature is that the speakers are too close to the iPod’s hard drive and actually can pick up the sound of it spinning. As with the Nano recorder, use a high quality external microphone to record music or for podcasting. It comes with a plastic stand so you can prop it up while recording.

There are lots of devices you can use to record directly into your iPod – these two are the best!
