The fact that a no-fuss, idealistic and former student paper editor-in-chief (in the “Devil Wears Prada”) still gets seduced by the glitz and glamor of the fashion world should be enough of an answer . Yet it still leaves me befuddled – the sense of priority most people give to fashion and clothes and looking good.

Don’t get me wrong! I like a decent pair of jeans as much as the next guy, but you won’t catch me forking out hundreds of dollars for a pair. Forget that. When I asked my teenage daughter what field she wanted to pursue, she started rambling on about fashion design and merchandising. Hmm, big surprise! Hollywood was the next stage in his career, acting in one reel and silent movies before progressing to the talkies. There were many memorable roles and Fields made the most of them. He played a fine Humpty-Dumpty in a 1933 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. When director George Cukor chose him to play Mr. Micawber in David Copperfield in 1935, it was an inspired choice and he gave one of his best performances. One of his most famous partnerships was with Mae West when he appeared opposite her in the 1940 comic western, My Little Chickadee.

In contrast to his film alter ego that disliked women, WC fields had a full romantic life. He married a chorus girl named Harriet in 1900 but they separated seven years later, having had a son together. He would later have another son by a girlfriend. His companion for fourteen years until the end of his life was Carlotta Monti, a minor actress. WC Fields died of a stomach hemorrhage in 1946. His witty one liners live on after him and his portly frame and red, bulbous nose are amongst the most recognizable trademarks of any entertainer. Perhaps his appeal has endured because his humor is very cynical and abrasive, a style in keeping with today’s comedians.

British actress Jane Seymour played the central role, as a female doctor trying to break into a man’s world. She moves from her hometown of Boston to Colorado Springs, enduring a culture shock as she adapts to her new life in the ‘wild west’. Dr Mike Quinn sets up her practice and struggles to gain the trust of the small community. Female doctors are extremely rare in the 1860s and the women are just as wary of her as the men. In time, she demonstrates that she is a fine doctor. The townsfolk also warm to her kind and honest nature.

Quinn befriends Sully, played by Joe Lando, a handsome man who is respected by the locals and has a relationship with the Cheyenne. Eventually, this friendship leads to romance and they get married in an extended episode. Seymour fell pregnant in real life so the happy couple in Dr Quinn Medicine Woman has a daughter together. Quinn’s other close ally is midwife Charlotte Cooper and she asks Quinn to be the guardian for her three children as lays dying from a snake wound. She cheerfully takes on this responsibility and is a wonderful parent to Matthew, Colleen and Brian.

The show attracted a lot of high profile guest appearances with various actors performing in three or four episodes each. These additions to the regular cast lifted Dr Quinn Medicine Woman from being too predictable and included Edward Albert, Maxwell Caulfield, Ben Murphy and Stacy Keach.
