I have lived all over the country and in various portions of the world, and I am convinced that there is not a major city anywhere on earth that doesn’t have at least one Irish pub. Irish pubs, as a matter of fact, are one of the only cultural symbols whose importance is universally constant – they are popular around the world as good places to get a drink, watch soccer, and meet friendly people. I have seen people who don’t like folk music and have never encountered a single Irishman singing Irish pub songs on the street while drunk on a Sunday afternoon.

For a long time, I thought all Irish pubs were the similar. You see, the Irish pubs San Francisco has are almost similar as the New York ones, and the Chicago ones are not much variation. Primarily, although it is difficult to point to any one thing, there is a particular Irish bar atmosphere that remains the same. The walls are always wood-paneled, the crowd is friendly and populated heavily with locals and regulars, and beer and whiskey are often the specialties. Constantly, there are live performers at night and at the very least there is always an open mic night at least once a week. Based on this, I thought I Understood what an Irish pub was like. Before I went to Ireland, however, I have no concrete idea.

Irish Spring soap, for example, can sell since everybody knows that Ireland is green and therefore, fresh and clean. Similarly, Irish pubs do so well since everyone knows that the Irish love to drink stout beer, eat potatoes – excellent bar food – and have a raucous good time when drunk. German pubs – dwelt by stereotypically dour Germans – have not had the same glory, although the Germans could drink every bit as well as the Irish. Even English pubs don’t have the reputation.

Nonetheless, authentic Irish culture is much different than you will consider from your typical Irish pubs in this country. If you go to Ireland as a matter of fact, you are definitely stepping into unacquainted territory. The people are friendly once they get to know you, but when you first step into a small Irish bar in an unfamiliar town, you are certainly made conscious of the truth that you are a stranger. It is not the same everything goes atmosphere as in this country.

Christian Bale : Is Christian Bale the Next Big Movie Star?

Do you know who Christian Bale is?

Chances are if you do then you wonder how anyone else doesn’t. And if you don’t then you probably wonder how some people think he’s so famous. Crazy I know, but it’s the truth.

Christian Bale is one of those actors who have a very faithful following – especially on the Internet. But he’s still a relative unknown to major sections of the US. Chances are you’ve seen him in a movie whether you realize it or not.

Bale is not a young guy – he just turned 34 in January – but he still must be considered at least in the early to middle stages of his career. He certainly made many movies before American Psycho but it was that movie that first gave him a healthy dose of publicity. Still, he didn’t continue the momentum he built-up with that movie and he stayed pretty much in the background.

Now, he’s about to dash to the forefront of Hollywood.

Bale, who was born in Wales (the UK) – took a major step toward stardom when he starred in the new Batman movie, Batman Begins, and the remake of the 1950s Western, 3:10 to Yuma. But in the next year and a half he will star in two more movies that are sure to be Blockbusters. I predict that those two movies will catapult Bale up with the top 5 actors in Hollywood. That’s right. He’ll be mentioned with guys like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and possibly even Tom Hanks.

This summer Bale will again play Bruce Wayne in the latest Batman movie – The Dark Knight. And then next summer (May 22, 2009 – to be exact) Bale will star in what is sure to be the summer’s biggest movie, the latest Terminator movie – Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. This movie will be huge and it will vault Bale into the stratosphere as he plays the role of John Connor.

And really stardom couldn’t happen to a better guy. Bale is really involved in some worthy causes and uses his money and his name to influence positive change in this world. He comes from a family that is involved in causes (his father actually married famed feminist Gloria Steinem in 2000) that are noble. So he was raised to care and try to make positive changes and he’s sure to continue with his great works.

So maybe you’ve heard of Christian Bale and maybe you haven’t. But one thing’s for sure, within the next year and a half, everyone will know exactly who this great actor is.

The fact that a no-fuss, idealistic and former student paper editor-in-chief (in the “Devil Wears Prada”) still gets seduced by the glitz and glamor of the fashion world should be enough of an answer . Yet it still leaves me befuddled – the sense of priority most people give to fashion and clothes and looking good.

Don’t get me wrong! I like a decent pair of jeans as much as the next guy, but you won’t catch me forking out hundreds of dollars for a pair. Forget that. Not that my taste has any effect on the fashion world whatsoever. Oodles of young people are flocking to fashion design and merchandising colleges to better learn the business. Hey, I can’t say that I blame them. There is plenty of money to be made there. I’m pretty sure Tom Ford is starving these days.

It cannot be denied, however, that fashion design school is a magnet not only for people who have made dressing up a lifelong vocation, but also for students who are dazzled by the beautiful clothes. Countless of high school fashion graduates line up in colleges offering fashion design and merchandising to get a shot at entering this charmed world. It also doesn’t hurt that world-renowned designers live in the most exclusive addresses, hobnob with celebrities, not to mention earn tons and tons of money doing the thing they love the most.

When I asked my teenage daughter what field she wanted to pursue, she started rambling on about fashion design and merchandising. Hmm, big surprise! What teenage girl isn’t interested in the fashion world? As far as I can tell, they all go gaga over clothing, shoes, and accessories. Anyway, she began taking a high school course in fashion design and merchandising her senior year. Unfortunately she hated it. Now she is a bit torn regarding her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the fashion industry, but is naturally worried about whether or not she’ll like it. I told her to give fashion design and merchandising another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no one said she had to delve into this particular aspect of the fashion world. There are a few choices out there.

You need to work hard and compete with a lot of people, but if you are willing to sweat it out then there’s a good chance of you making it.
